Collection of Nobel Prize Female Winners in Sciences Chapter II

The last chapter briefly introduced the female scientists of Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry the two aspects, this post will make a rough description of the rest 10 women who did great job in physiology or medicine and gained Nobel Prize in the field. With the level-up of general live quality, there are more and more quests on the treatment for diseases that were unable to deal with, thus many researches and studies in the field were carried out and great breakthroughs have made.

The first women who achieved great finding and gained the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is Gerty Theresa Cori from Czech Republic , sharing one fourth of the prize with another two man “for their discovery of the course of the catalytic conversion of glycogen” when she worked in USA.

Rosalyn Yalow from USA shared one half of the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two male scientists for that they discovered something important concerning brain peptide hormone production.

Barbara McClintock was awarded Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for that she discovered mobile genetic elements, which is of great significance for the further studies in genetics.

For the finding of growth factors, the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded jointly to Rita Levi-Montalcini, Italian scientist and a male scientist in cell physiology.

One third of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Gertrude B. Elion, from USA, for the findings of important principles regarding to drug treatment.

Then in 1990’s only one female scientist, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard enjoyed the award. She shared 1/3 of the prize for the discoveries about genetic control of early embryonic development.

In 2004, Linda B. Buck was awarded jointly with a male scientist “for their discoveries of odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system”.

Françoise Barré-Sinoussi shared one third of the prize of 2008 for the finding of an immunodeficiency virus.

In 2009 there are two female in a same discovery were awarded jointly with another man the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of the protection mechanism placed from telomeres and telomerase on chromosomes. They are Carol W. Greider and Elizabeth H. Blackburn

The latest one is May-Britt Moser, from Norway gained the honor in last year-2014. She shared one fourth of the prize for the discovery of a type of brain cell.

That’s the list of all women scientists who have awarded Nobel Prize from 1901 to 2004, from which it can be concluded that women can also achieve what men can do in science. Hope there will be female winners of Nobel Prize in this year.
